NASA [National Aeronautics and Space Act] Law and Legal Definition
NASA [National Aeronautics and Space Act] of 1958 promotes space research, improves aeronautical travel, and builds manned and unmanned space vehicles. The Act established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, commonly known as NASA as an agency of the federal government. This Act is codified at 42 USCS § 2451.
The main objectives of the Act are:
1. to expand f human knowledge of the Earth and of phenomena in the atmosphere and space;
2. to improve the usefulness, performance, speed, safety, and efficiency of aeronautical and space vehicles;
3. to develop and operate vehicles capable of carrying instruments, equipment, supplies, and living organisms through space;
4. to establish long-range studies of the potential benefits and problems involved in the utilization of aeronautical and space activities for peaceful and scientific purposes;
5. to preserve the role of the U.S. as a leader in aeronautical and space science and technology and in the application thereof to the conduct of peaceful activities within and outside the atmosphere;
6. to make available to agencies of national defense information’s regarding the discoveries which have value or significance to that agency;
7. to promote cooperation by the U.S. with other nations and groups of nations in work done pursuant to this Act and in the peaceful application of the results thereof;
8. to make most effective utilization of the scientific and engineering resources; and
9. to preserve the preeminent position of the U.S. in aeronautics and space through research and technology development related to associated manufacturing processes.
