National Ambient Air Quality Standards Law and Legal Definition
The National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) are standards established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Clean Air Act. The EPA is required to set uniform national ambient air quality standards for certain specified air pollutants that are dangerous to public health or welfare. For example, EPA has specified that ambient air must contain not more than a specific concentration of carbon monoxide.
The EPA office of Air Quality Planning and Standards (OAQPS) has set National Ambient Air Quality Standards for six principal pollutants, which are known as “criteria” pollutants. The states must prepare a State Implementation Plan (SIP) that contains the steps they will take to ensure that air quality meets the standards of federal NAAQS.
