National Board of Review Law and Legal Definition
The National Board of Review is a board for the review of motion pictures. It was founded in 1909. Originally, it was established by the name New York Board of Motion Picture Censorship by the theater owners and film distributors to assert their constitutional freedom of expression. Its name was later changed to the National Board of Review. The National Board of Review was the unofficial clearing house for new movies. Its stated purpose was to certify films of merit. It was actually a de facto censorship organization. The National Board of Review became the first award promoting organization in the film industry.
