National Fire Danger Rating System Law and Legal Definition
The National Fire Danger Rating System (NFDRS) is a system used by wildland fire management agencies to determine current fire danger at local and national levels. It consists of a variety of indices that portray current potential fire danger conditions. It is a nationally accepted index.
The National Fire Danger Rating System allows land agencies to estimate today’s or tomorrow’s fire danger for a given area. The NFDRS integrates the effects of existing and expected states of selected fire danger factors into one or more qualitative or numeric indices that reflect an area’s fire protection needs. It shows certain symbols and adjectives to alert the public of fire danger levels.
The following is an example of a state statute (Colorado) referring to the term:
The board of county commissioners have the power to ban open fires to a degree and in a manner that the board of county commissioners deems necessary to reduce the danger of wildfires within those portions of the unincorporated areas of the county where the danger of forest or grass fires is found to be high based on competent evidence. For purposes of this paragraph (n.5), "competent evidence" may include, but is not limited to, the use of the national fire danger rating system and any other similar indices or information.
