National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Law and Legal Definition
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (“Institute”) is an organization in the U.S. that conducts and supports research, training, health information dissemination with respect to the use of blood and blood products. It is established pursuant to 42 USCS § 285b. It also provides for the management of blood resources and other programs with respect to heart, blood vessel, lung, and blood diseases. The following are the duties of the Director of the Institute:
1.To conduct and support programs that include community-based and population-based programs which are carried out in cooperation with public health agencies of state or local governments, and also with nonprofit private entities that are community-based health agencies.
2.To collect, identify, analyze, and disseminates information on research, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heart, blood vessel, lung, and blood diseases to patients and health physicians;
3.To provide maintenance of health to reduce the incidence of such diseases, and on the use of blood and blood products and blood resources;
4.To increase the awareness and knowledge of health care professionals and the public regarding the prevention of heart and blood vessel, lung, and blood diseases and the utilization of blood resources; and
5.To develop and disseminate to health professionals, patients and patient families, and the public information designed to encourage adults and children to adopt healthful practices concerning the prevention of such diseases.
