National Security Division Law and Legal Definition
The National Security Division (NSD) is a division of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). The NSD takes care of the national security functions of the DOJ. The division was created in March 2006 pursuant to the USA PATRIOT Reauthorization and Improvement Act.
The creation of the NSD consolidated the DOJ’s primary national security operations: the former Office of Intelligence Policy and Review and the Counterterrorism and Counterespionage Sections of the Criminal Division. The new Office of Law and Policy, the Executive Office, and the Office of Justice for Victims of Overseas Terrorism constitute the NSD.
The NSD aims to combat terrorism and other threats to national security. The Division performs both the national security and intelligence functions. The Division is headed by the Assistant Attorney General for National Security.
