Negative reprisal is a term used in the international law in the context of war. Reprisals are negative when a state refuses to fulfill a perfect obligation which it has contracted or to permit another nation to enjoy a right which it claims. Negative reprisals are less likely to produce an immediate rupture than those of a positive reprisal.
