NET Act of 1997 provides for the criminal prosecution of individuals who engage in copyright infringement, even when there is no monetary profit or commercial benefit from the infringement. This Act is officially known as the U.S. No Electronic Theft Act. The Act imposes a penalty of up to $250,000 in fines and an imprisonment for a term which may extent to five years.
