Office of Civil Rights [Department of State] Law and Legal Definition
The Office of Civil Rights within the Department of State advises and assists the Secretary of State and other principal officers of the Department in carrying out their responsibilities in connection with Titles VI and VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other laws, executive orders, and regulatory guidelines affecting affirmative employment and non-discrimination in the Federal sector.
The office consists of three sections:
a. Diversity Management that helps the Department to foster a work environment free of discrimination by maintaining an affirmative outreach program;
b. Intake and Resolution section that handles all complaints surrounding employment discrimination in both the informal/counseling process and the formal complaint process. This section deals complaints under discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, religion, and sexual orientation; and
c. Legal section that seeks to advance the mission of the Office by providing assistance with legal compliance as it relates to the administrative processing of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) complaints and other EEO issues.
