Office of Diplomatic Law and Litigation [L/DL] [Department of State] Law and Legal Definition
Office of Diplomatic Law and Litigation (Office) is a functional bureau of the U.S. Department of State. The Office of the Legal Advisor provides support to the Office in the performance of its functions and responsibilities. The functions of the Office include:
to provide legal advice in the interpretation and application of international agreements and domestic statutes relating to U.S. and foreign diplomatic and consular missions and personnel;
to provide legal advice on issues relating to head of state immunity;
to provide legal advice on issues relating to immunity of foreign states in the U.S.;
to provide legal advice in the interpretation and application of the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act;
to provide legal advice on issues relating to immunity of the U.S. Government and its personnel in litigation abroad; and
to provide legal advice on issues relating to the status of international organizations, including the UN.
