Office of Workers' Compensation Programs (OWCP) Law and Legal Definition
The Office of Workers' Compensation Programs (OWCP) is an office under the Department of Labor which administers compensation programs to workers. A director administers the programs assigned to OWCP, under the general supervision of the assistant secretary.
Four major disability compensation programs namely, the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation program, the Federal Employees' Compensation Program, the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Program, and the Black Lung Benefits Program are administered by the OWCP. These programs are intended to serve specific employee groups who are covered under the relevant statutes and regulations by mitigating the financial burden resulting from workplace injury. It provides for wage replacement benefits, medical treatment, vocational rehabilitation and other benefits to certain workers or their dependents who experience work-related injury or occupational disease.
The Office of Workers' Compensation Programs (OWCP) are also responsible for providing benefits to civilian employees of the U.S. for disability due to personal injury or disease sustained while in the performance of duty.
OWCP helps to protect the interests of eligible workers, employers and the Federal Government by ensuring timely and accurate claims adjudication and provision of benefits. It responsibly administers the funds authorized for this purpose. It restores injured workers to gainful work when permitted by the effects of the injury.
