Open verdict refers to a finding by a coroner's jury of death without stating the cause. For example, the coroner's jury may reach a finding that the subject “came to his death at the hands of a person or persons unknown.” Such a verdict leaves open the question about the identity of the criminal. The open verdict is an option available to a coroner's jury at an inquest in the legal system of England and Wales.
