Respondent refers to the party who responds to a pleading in a civil matter. A party against whom an appeal is brought is also called a respondent. In the context of the market research industry, it is one who is inspired to participate in a focus group, interview or survey. The party filing the complaint or other formal request for relief is typically called the petitioner.
